In 2019, there were 73 airports in mainland France. Out of those, 41 received between 10,000 and 3 million commercial passengers in the same year. This report deals with the specific situation of this category of infrastructure, the intermediate size airports, whose traffic levels exceed those of local aerodromes but do not reach those of international airports; most of them have been owned by local communities since the airport decentralisation. Those airports face a common set of challenges, even though they serve a variety of functions, from bringing in Northen European tourists, to integrating isolated areas or serving well-connected regional metropolises.
