Inclusive education for pupils with disabilities

The aim of inclusive education is to ensure quality schooling for all pupils by taking into account their individual characteristics and special educational needs. Since the law of 11 February 2005 on equal rights and opportunities, participation and citizenship for persons with disabilities, the enrolment of pupils with disabilities in mainstream schools has been a principle of law in France. The number of pupils with disabilities in schools has tripled, rising from 155,361 at the start of the 2006 school year to 436,085 in 2022. In quantitative terms, the school system has succeeded in transforming itself. Nevertheless, the pathways followed by pupils and their families remain complex: information on solutions and pathways, smooth transitions between mainstream schools and medico-social environments, educational guidance and socio-professional integration. The Court's evaluation, following a request from the public in 2022, looks at the path taken by these pupils, from their entry into nursery school at the age of three until they leave high school. Four key messages emerge.
